Before Energy Drinks, There Was This...

Published by Bridgitte Longshore & Kim Carrigan on 3rd Sep 2026

THE INCAS DIDN'T HAVE ENERGY DRINKS . .

THEY HAD MACA.

Long before caffeine shots and sugary energy drinks, the people of the Peruvian Andes relied on one remarkable root to help fuel life in one of the harshest environments on Earth

Maca grows where...
✔ Oxygen is scarce
✔ Days are intensely sunny
✔ Nights fall below freezing
✔ Soil is rocky and unforgiving
✔ And at an elevation of 13,000+ feet above sea level.

Nature doesn't create shortcuts.
It creates resilience.

No doubt we all could benefit from some extra resilience.

Today, let's do a shallowish dive into what they have known for eons.

What is Maca and Why Is It So Special?

Maca is a root vegetable and member of the Brassicaceae family- mustard or cruciferous family of plants, which includes radishes, turnips, rutabagas, horseradish, wasabi, cabbage, etc. Maca grows both wild and cultivated almost exclusively in the high elevation regions of the Andes mountains of Peru.

Peruvians have been cultivating this crop in this harsh climate for thousands of years using it as both a staple food and a traditional medicine. Modern scientific research is beginning to validate it's many medicinal benefit- not that we need science to validate what humans have known for centuries, but some people like that kind of thing.
In North America, maca is typically found in either a powdered form of the dried root (free flowing powder, or encapsulated), as liquid extract or tincture, in supplements, and in functional foods and beverages.

So, that's cool and all, but why would YOU want to eat maca?

According to modern scientific research, the following benefits of consuming maca have been supported by science:

Energy, Mood, Fatigue: Studies show that maca improves overall mood and health related quality of life. It also reduces fatigue and boosts energy. Maca does not contain caffeine- it isn't a stimulant. That's one of our favourite things about it.

Sexual Health & Fertility: In both clinical studies and traditionally, maca has been shown to improve sexual desire, and erectile function in men. It may help alleviate symptoms of andropause (aka male 'menopause'- aka late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) - and yes, this is a thing.

Women's Health: According to preliminary clinical research, maca may help alleviate symptoms of menopause. We here at Giddy Yo have received our fair share of anecdotal evidence in supporting of this.

In postmenopausal & perimenopausal women, key findings show significantly reduced symptoms like anxiety and depression, as well as alleviated physical symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.
Other Areas: In preclinical and clinical studies, maca shows potential in other areas, including immune support, antioxidant effects, neuroprotection, and blood sugar regulation.

Does Maca help 'balance hormones'?

Maca is often touted as a hormone balancing food, however a well-regarded 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that maca did not change the serum concentrations of estradiol, FSH, or other related hormones. The researchers concluded that the reduction in anxiety, depression, and sexual dysfunction was independent of any estrogenic or androgenic activity.

Maca does NOT contain testosterone or any hormones. However, it contains bioactive compounds called macaenes and macamides, which are thought to act on the endocrine system indirectly to better regulate hormone balance.
