What Makes Spirulina Greenish Blue? Meet Phycocyanin!

One of spirulina's most powerful antioxidants is phycocyanin, the blue pigment that gives spirulina its blue-green colour. But phycocyanin isn't just for looks—it's a nutritional powerhouse with science-backed benefits.

Top Benefits of Phycocyanin:

Powerful Antioxidant: Combats oxidative stress and aging
Anti-Inflammatory: Reduces chronic inflammation and joint pain
Immune Booster: Strengthens white blood cells & immune function
Heart Health Support: Helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol
Brain Protection: Supports cognitive function and mental clarity
Detoxifier: Binds toxins, heavy metals, and free radicals

But not all spirulina is the same (or safe).

Giddy Yo sources only lab verified spirulina from TAIWAN. Taiwan is known to cultivate the best, highest quality greens (spirulina & chlorella) because of its clean water, strict quality control regulations, emphasis on organic farming, and its reputation for producing high quality foods.  The market is flooded with low quality (and thus low cost) spirulina, so please, buyer beware! The last quote that was provided to me for 'certified organic' greens from China was ½ my current cost - HALF!! So family, please beware and purchase with care.

Why Spirulina Quality Matters & What To Consider When Purchasing Greens:
Many cheap spirulina brands—especially from China or India—can be contaminated with heavy metals, radiation, microcystins, harmful bacteria, and other toxins.

Giddy Yo's lab verified spirulina is clean & nutrient-dense. Unlike many cultivators that use municipal water sources (often treated with chlorine, aluminum and fluoride), Giddy Yo spirulina is grown using pure mountain spring water from a remote area in the southern part of Taiwan. Water supply and quality for aquaculture is important- so pay attention to this please!

Key Highlights of Giddy Yo Spirulina Production Process:
  • Cultivated in shallow, man-made outdoor pools for optimal photosynthesis
  • Spray-dried within 3-10 seconds at 130-150°C, preserving nutritional integrity. Not only is this a necessary step to fully dry the goods, but it's also a 'kill-step' ensuring a low bacterial load.
  • Non-irradiated, GMO-free, and free from additives, fillers, flowing agents, and other unnecessary ingredients - just 100% organic spirulina!
  • Each lot is tested for radiation, microbiologicals, and heavy metals.
  • Production has a strict SOP and is certified ISO22000/HACCP. They've been cultivating greens since 1970's and are at the leading edge of spirulina and chlorella R&D.
  • Costs only pennies per day! When you consume 1g per day, the cost is $0.17- and that's Canadian dollars- if you buy on promo it's much less!

A few additional reasons why eating Spirulina is a YES:
Provides Superior Chlorophyll content (not to be confused with chlorella):
Chlorophyll is the green pigment that spirulina (and other green plants/ algaes/ bacteria) use to make food during photosynthesis. Although limited, studies suggest that these pigments (and their derivatives) possess therapeutic properties and a wide range of beneficial effects, such as:

  • Protection against endocrine disruptorsBy reducing oxidative stress, chlorophyll helps to protect endocrine organs, such as the ovaries, testes, and thyroid gland, from damage caused by endocrine disruptors. Secondly, chlorophyll has been shown to exhibit detoxification properties. It can bind to and effectively remove certain endocrine-disrupting chemicals from the body. A few widely recognized endocrine disruptors are; chemicals found in plastics and food packaging, such as Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, PCBs, pesticides like glyphosate and atrazine, certain chemicals in personal care products like parabens and triclosan.
  • Neuroprotective and Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Toxins and environmental pollutants can accumulate in the brain and contribute to neuronal dysfunction and degeneration. Chlorophyll's detoxifying properties may aid in the elimination of these harmful substances, reducing their impact on brain health and potentially preventing or delaying neurodegenerative conditions. Moreover, chlorophyll-rich foods have been associated with improved cognitive function and brain health.
  • Anti-Obesity Effects: researchers found that Spirulina extract may suppress lipid accumulation, decreased body weight gain, fat mass, triglyceride and total cholesterol serum levels.
  • More, much more!

Spirulina is a source of Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) - why is this important?
Essential fatty acids are necessary for optimal health however the body cannot make EFAs thus we need proper foods to ensure adequate supply. GLA is an omega 6 fatty acid and a precursor to the body's production of prostaglandins - master hormones that control many bodily functions. The body converts GLA to substances that have anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects.

Poor diet, stress, saturated fats and alcohol may contribute to GLA deficiency, which may lead to conditions like dry skin and hair, brittle nails, cracked heels, bumps on back of arms, hormone imbalances, weight gain, eczema, dermatitis, etc. A food source of GLA is important, especially for women. Known GLA foods are mother's milk and oil extracts of evening primrose, black currant and borage seeds. 1.6g (½ tsp) of spirulina contains as much GLA as a capsule of evening primrose oil.

How to Choose the Best Spirulina:
When shopping for safe, high-quality spirulina, look for:
  • Third party lab verification
  • Non-GMO, clean, and free from additives, flowing agents, preservatives, etc.
  • Phycocyanin-rich – Grown in Taiwan for the highest potency
  • Trusted source & organic spirulina  – No microcystins, pesticides, or irradiation
Beware of “Raw” Spirulina Claims!
Some brands market "raw spirulina," but this can be misleading and unsafeRaw spirulina may contain harmful bacteria, so buyer beware! If you stumble upon this product, please inquire as to how they keep it food-safe- what is the kill step used to ensure low bacterial/ mold etc. load, and if they will share lab results.  We suggest that instead, choose third-party tested, low-temperature dried spirulina from trusted sources like Giddy Yo.
