Banana Spears  (Ecuador)

One of our best selling superfoods, GY Banana Spears are made from the sweet fruit of sun-ripened heirloom variety of Ecuadorian red banana. Although our Banana Spears aren't the prettiest, they are super delicious and taste like banana bread! Once you discover these gems your life will forever be changed in a good way!

Red Bananas are a variety of banana with reddish-purple skin - the redder the fruit, the higher the carotene and vitamin C levels. When ripened, red bananas have a flesh that is cream-to-light pink in colour. They are smaller, softer and more plump than the common yellow Cavendish banana and are sweeter, with a slight raspberry-banana flavour.

GY Banana spears grow within Ecuador's regions of mineral rich dense black volcanic soil.  They are low-fat, sodium and cholesterol-free and a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C & B6. Because our Bananas are sun-dried and low-temperature dehydrated, the nutrients are concentrated making them little mineral powerhouses! These banana products have the same flavour characteristic of a peeled perfectly ripened banana.

GY Banana Spears are allowed to vine ripen under completely organic growing conditions and are then carefully hand-picked at the peak of freshness. This means the fruit remains connected to the plant until it's the natural time for it to be harvested. This ensures all potential nutrients are able to fully develop. Most commercial bananas are the highly hybridized Cavendish variety which is picked prematurely and then gas ripened.

What exactly is an heirloom variety? A true heirloom is a cultivar that has been nurtured, selected, and handed down for many generations and must be open-pollinated. No genetically modified organisms can be considered heirloom cultivars. Typically, heirlooms have adapted over time to whatever climate and soil they have grown in. Due to their genetics, they are often resistant to local pests, diseases, and extremes of weather.

  1. YUM

I love these. They remind me of the dried bananas I would eat when I was in Costa Rica. They're delicious and anytime I want to deny my craving for candy I eat these and feel like I didn't.

  2. rare to have access to this in market of mostly unripe, unfair labor fruit

i only recently started learning about fact that store-bought bananas are picked so unripe and this really worried me so how satisfying to have found a company that teaches us about this on the description of their packaging and really does allow the fruit to mature naturally. in a time when produce, even from countries you'd think would treat the workers right such as usa, is picked by what you could describe as slave-labor it's satisfying to know these come from farmers paid fairly, how it should be. the taste of these is amazing. thank you for working to provide this to your fellow people and teaching us about reality!

  3. I love it as snack and thickener and sweetener for my smoothie!!!

I love to make a hot chocolate drink with raw cacao paste and diced banana spears in hot water, and then puree them together in an immersion blender. It is so thick and satisfying, and I don't need to add sugar!!!
